What is a mini split air conditioning unit and why do people use them in their home?

To understand when to repair a mini split AC, I first want to explain what a mini split air conditioning unit is capable of doing. A mini split AC system manages all of your comfort needs, from heating and cooling as well as the ability to purify and dehumidify. Mini splits are often used to cool small homes or office spaces, and more specifically, are used to maintain add-ons, like a garage or a server room in an office space. These systems are very quiet and offer comfortable airflow without the need for ductwork. Essentially a great way to add on to an existing building or increase the cooling capacity of one area of a building. They can come in handy in the retrofit air conditioning installation industry.

What Is The Difference Between AC Repair and mini split AC Repair?

Mini split systems are built differently than your typical ac system. There are 5 main parts that control the functionality of a mini split system. When outside of your home or office, you can find the outdoor unit, often referred to as a condenser. The condenser compresses refrigerant into a smaller volume, and when this happens, it raises the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant, it is cooled by the outdoor air and is sent inside. When outdoors, you can often see two main lines connected to this unit, the refrigerant line and the electrical line. When you have a mini split system, you will find that indoors you have an indoor unit commonly known as an air handler, which is responsible for removing the heat from the room it is installed in or in heat mode to add heat to the room. It does so by running the air from inside across the freon inside the coil. Almost all mini split air conditioning systems all come with heat pump capability to heat your home in up to -14 degrees outdoor temp.

With all of this information, you have options to consider when it comes time to repair your mini split in your office or home. To begin, check your indoor unit for an ac filter and make sure it is clean. Having a dirty ac filter can cause your coils to freeze, and when the system stops, that frost turns to water, which can leak, and can damage your property. Dirty filters can also trigger an automatic shutdown to prevent the unit from overheating. Since this system blows air inside, you want to make sure that the fan blades are free from debris, dust, and dirt. Having a dirty system can reduce the airflow in your space and this can cause damage to the rest of the system. Prolonged use of a dirty system can cause the units to overperform to compensate for the lack of airflow and the inability to meet your desired comfort levels. Dirty systems run longer and may never meet the temperature you set, and this will consume more energy leading to higher electric costs. Make sure you keep up with the maintenance on the indoor and outdoor units to keep dirt and dust from normal use building up.

Do Mini Split Air Conditioning Unit Have Freon?

If you are not getting any air flow, you may have issues with electricity being supplied to the system. Ensure that your system is able to turn on by adjusting the power to the switch to the on position. If you notice that the system is unresponsive, you can check the breaker box attached to see if the units are being supplied power. Be cautious when handling any device or anything that involves electricity. You should refer to a licensed and trained professional air conditioning repair technician.

Mini splits are a ductless ac system that require refrigerant to provide cooling effectively. If your systems fails to cool as desired, you may want to make sure that you unit is not leaking freon. We do this by checking to see if the unit operational freon pressure is correct. If you notice that the indoor unit is blowing but not showing signs of cooling the room, it may be the result of a refrigerant leak. Look for signs of the leaks by checking around the unit. If you hear a hissing sound, this may be a sign of a refrigerant leaking indoors. If you take a look outdoors, check to see if the pipes are frozen or look as if they are iced over. Pipes in this condition are a good sign that there is a refrigerant leak. If a system has low refrigerant levels, it will be unable to meet your desired heating or cooling temperatures.

Other leaks to be aware of are caused by draining issues. As the indoor unit pulls in heat and humidity, a drain pan is installed to collect the water from the excessive humidity turning to water. If this drain pan collects dirt and dust, the drain line may become clogged leaving you with water overflowing from the sides of the drain pan. If water sits over time, the drain pan can become rusted or corroded.
