The rules and regulations surrounding the various gambling markets in the US are diverse and plentiful. And, at times, they can be veeery difficult to get your head around. Below, we talk about 4 of the most exciting states where you can bet, what you can bet on, and what you absolutely cannot bet on. Nevada
What US state comes to mind first when you think of gambling? We’d bet (pun very much intended) that Nevada is right up there at the top. The iconic state has a diverse range of gaming options, including traditional casinos, poker rooms, and sports betting. And Las Vegas, known as the “Entertainment Capital of the World,” attracts millions of visitors annually, thanks, in part to its relatively lenient gaming laws which contribute to the constant growth of the industry. In fact, in 2022, 38,829,300 visitors arrived in Sin City, with almost a quarter of them purported to have placed at least one bet. The Las Vegas Strip, on its own, contributed $8.28 billion of gambling revenue for the state, up 17% from 2022 ($7.96 billion). For those who don’t want to experience the noise, lights, and – let’s be honest, the chaos – of the Strip, mobile sports betting and online poker are both legal in Nevada, but only for users physically located within the state.
Missouri
Missouri’s gambling laws are comparatively more restrictive than those in Las Vegas and the industry, which generates over $1 billion in annual revenue, is overseen by the Missouri Gaming Commission. One of the most exciting offerings in the state includes licensed excursion gambling boats and floating facilities, offering casino games such as poker, craps, and blackjack. These riverboat casinos, however, are required to sail at least twice daily to maintain their gambling license. Missouri operates an official state lottery, with proceeds directed towards education funding. Pari-mutuel betting is allowed for international or interstate horse race simulcasts, but off-track betting within the state is not permitted. Bingo is considered legal when sponsored by bona fide charitable organizations. Missouri online casinos and sports betting are not legally allowed in as yet, with locals making use of some of the best and most exciting offshore casinos instead.
New Jersey
New Jersey stands out for its relatively permissive gambling laws, particularly in the realms of casino gambling and sports betting, which surpasses many other states. Key facets of the state’s gambling landscape include the presence of numerous licensed casinos in the gambling Mecca of Atlantic City, bringing together a variety of table games and slots. Sports betting is not only legal in retail locations, but also online through licensed operators if you are a resident of NJ. Pari-mutuel wagering at racetracks, the New Jersey Lottery featuring draw and instant-win games, online poker, and casino games, also contribute to the diverse gambling options available. Regulatory oversight is shared by the New Jersey Casino Control Commission, responsible for regulating casino operations and licensing, and the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, which regulates other forms of gambling such as sports betting, online gaming, and horse racing. In 2023, New Jersey’s gambling industry generated a record-breaking $5.8 billion in gross gaming revenue (GGR), with the upward trend expected to rise further in 2024.
Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania has one of the highest revenue-generating casino markets in the country and, unsurprisingly, has become a key player in the US gaming market. The Keystone State amassed $5.7 billion in revenue from gambling in 2023, with the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board reporting this to be a 9.3% increase from the previous year. The success of the online gaming industry in Pennsylvania is due to two main factors. First, the state is full of gambling enthusiasts, with reports that as many as 10% of adults living in Pennsylvania have gambled online (at least once) within the last year, with this figure anticipated to rise further in the coming years. Secondly, the state now has a favorable regulatory environment for casinos and gambling. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board has been extremely proactive in regulating the industry, and it has created its rules to be fair to both players and operators. Legal gambling in Pennsylvania includes casinos, sports betting, lotteries, and small games of chance such as raffles for charity. However, it should be noted that online casino games and sports betting are legal but only through licensed operators; using unlicensed platforms is illegal.
