Rick achieved his initial fame in 1985 when he became a member of Doug E. Fresh’s Get Fresh Crew and was featured on the single The Show. In 1986, he joined Russell Simmons’ Rush Artist Management and was signed to Def Jam Records. In 1988, he produced his debut solo album titled The Great Adventures of Slick Rick. In 1989, Rick fired four gunshots at his cousin Mark Plummer and he was later arrested and he pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted murder and possession of weapon. He was later sent to five years imprisonment and in 1997, he was released from prison. In 1991, he released his second album titled The Ruler’s Back. In 1994, his third studio album titled Behind Bars was released and in 1999, he released a fourth album titled The Art of Storytelling, the album featured Nas, Snoop Dogg, OutKast, Raekwon and other top stars. On June 21, he and the Soul Rebels Brass Band collaborated in Washington D.C. at the Howard Theatre. In 2014, he participated in Will.i.am’s Trans4M concert which raised over $2.4 million. On April 15, 2016, Rick was granted a United States citizenship. In November, 2018, he released a single titled Snakes of The World Today’. On October 6, 2008, he was honoured on the VH1 Hip Hop Honors show. Over the years, Rick and his wife have made donations to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.
