Phillip Dennis Ivey Jr. is widely seen as the best poker player in the world for his remarkably well-versed skills in the game and consistently fantastic performances in the World Series of Poker tour, which have helped him earn remarkable riches throughout his career. Poker Career
Before he was a professional poker player, Phil Ivey was playing poker recreationally with his colleagues at the telemarketing company he worked with in New Jersey. Phil Ivey first broke out on the poker scene back in 2000 as he secured his first WSOP major win in a Pot Limit Omaha event, Subsequently, this gave him his first career bracelet of the 10 he would go on to win (as of July 2023). While the total sum of his career winnings across both live and online tournaments is almost uncountable, the figure is reported to be around $40m. Despite being an American poker hero, one of his biggest tournament wins came in Australia when he won the 2014 Aussie Millions LK Boutique $250,000 Challenge for AU$ 4,000,000.
While it is difficult to pinpoint the exact reason for Ivey’s success, one of the primary reasons is his strength in all departments of the game and his ability to play multiple strategies at once. Overbetting on his hands combined with his ability to catch opponent bluffs has ensured that he has been able to lead opposition players into tricky situations while not falling victim himself. It’s this versatility which has served him well and led him to have such a distinguished career.
In 2017, Ivey was elected to the Poker Hall of Fame, the institution run by Caesars Entertainment which recognizes the best poker players to grace the game. This has put him into exalted poker terms alongside other legends of the sport like Johnny Moss, Scotty Nguyen, and Daniel Negreanu.
As such a popular figure in the sport, Ivey has capitalized on this to push two poker-related business ventures. Ivey Poker is a ‘free for play’ poker platform that allows players to play with Ivey himself (when he’s available!) as well as other professional players. The Ivey League is an extension of this as it serves as a premium training platform for poker players to improve their game. In more recent years, Ivey as a shrewd businessman has also started trading NFTs related to poker.
In 2023, Ivey is still one of the more active players across the various tours and promotions, however owing to his pre-existing wealth he seldom needs to compete in every tournament.
Personal Life
Ivey was born in Riverside, California however his family moved to Roselle, New Jersey when Phil was just three months old.
Poker much like all gambling activities is regulated heavily in the US and is strictly for adults. This however did not stop a young Phil Ivey from participating in poker tables when growing up as he famously used a fake ID document to gain access to various poker tables as a teenager. This led to him later gaining the nickname ‘No Home Jerome’, as Jerome was one of the aliases he used for these illicit documents.
Phil married Luciaetta Ivey in 2002, however, the pair filed for divorce just seven years later. In what was considered to be a particularly messy separation, the settlements and paperwork (especially surrounding the financial implications) were long and drawn out, taking around two years to complete. After this Phil has kept his relationships very much a private affair as there is limited information omitted on his relationship status past 2009.
Due to his fondness for poker and desire to play the game, Ivey relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada where he could easily access poker tables.
Sports Outside of Poker
When Ivey is not watching or player poker, he is often watching basketball as he avidly follows both the Los Angeles Lakers and the Houston Rockets. As well as watching the sport, he also likes to place bets on the outcome of sporting events. He also likes to play golf recreationally and semi-professionally as he participated in the 2007 World Series of Golf tournament, while a venture into baccarat went wrong after a huge lawsuit where he failed to recover over $10m worth of winnings.
Charitable Work
Throughout his career, Ivey has been known to do considerable work and make sizable donations to charitable causes. This has included multiple children’s charities, as well as working with the Make-A-Wish foundation. In 2010, he notably took three ill children to a famous Las Vegas casino and taught them how to play numerous casino games, creating an unforgettable experience for the kids.
