Career
Peter Max began his art career in 1962 when he launched a small arts studio in Manhattan called ‘The Daly & Max Studio’ alongside his friend Tom Daly. In 1968, he appeared on The Tonight Show and he was also featured on Life Magazine. In 1970, his works were featured in the exhibition titled ‘The World of Peter Max’. He has been the official artist for many major events like the 1994 World Cup, the Grammy Awards, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the super bowls and many more. He was also the official artist of the 2000 World Series. In 1989, he designed the cover photo of Aretha Franklin’s Throught the Storm album. In 1994, he designed the artwork for progressive rock band Yes’s fourteenth studio album Talk. Over the years, Max’s artworks has been associated with the counter culture, neo-expressionism and psychedelic movements. Max’s artwork was featured on CBS’s The Early Show where his ’44 Obamas’ commemorating Barack Obama, the 44th president of the United States was debuted. In 2013, a book titled The Universe of Peter Max was published by HarperCollins. Max is best known for painting, drawing, etchings, collage, print making, sculpture, video and digital imagery. He often uses American icons and symbols in his artwork. He has created paintings of Ford, Carter, Reagan and Bush. He regularly features images of celebrities, politicians, athletes and sporting events and other pop culture subjects in his artwork. He is known for using bursts of color which often contains much or all of the visible spectrum.
