Paul Azinger is an American professional golfer and TV golf analyst. He is best known for winning the PGA Tour twelve times and for staying for almost 300 weeks in the top-10 of the Official World Golf Ranking between 1988 and 1994.

Paul Azinger Biography and Early Life

Paul Azinger was born Paul William Azinger on January 6, 1960 in Holyoke, Massachusetts, United States. He was born to his parents named Ralph Azinger (Father), a U.S. Air Force navigator and businessman and Jean Azinger (Mother).

He and his family later moved to Sarasota, Florida and he spent most of his childhood days pumping gas and painting boats at his father’s Marina.

Paul Azinger studied at Sarasota High School. He also studied at Brevard Community College and graduated in the 1970’s. He later enrolled at Florida State University on a scholarship and he also graduated with a degree from Eastern Florida State College.

 

Golf Career

From 1987 to 1993, Azinger won eleven tournaments. He finished one shot behind Nick Faldo at the 1987 Open Championship at Muirfield after making bogey at both the 71st and 72nd holes.

At the 1991 Ryder Cup, he fiercely contested against Seve Ballesteros which led to many controversies. In December 1993, he recorded a draw back in his golf career after he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in his right shoulder and he was subjected to chemotherapy.

In 2008, he became the U.S. Ryder Cup captain at the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky and he led his team to victory. In February 2010, he made his Champions Tour debut at The Ace Group Classic.

From 2005 to 2015, Azinger worked as a lead analyst for ESPN and ABC Sports; golf coverage. In 2016, he joined Fox Sports and in October, 2018, he became the lead golf analyst for both NBC Sports and Gold Channel.
