Issa Rae was born Jo-Issa Rae Diop on the 12th of January, 1985 in Los Angeles, California, United States and she was born to a father named Dr. Abdoulaye Diop, who worked as a pediatrician and neonatologist from Senegal and a mother named Delyna Diop, a teacher from Louisiana, her parents met for the first time in France, when they were both studying and she grew up with four siblings, after a while in the United States, Rae and her parents relocated to Dakar, Senegal, but they only stayed there for a short period before returning to the United States of America.
Rae was raised in Potomac, Maryland, but she also spent a bit of her early days in Los Angeles, California, where she attended Middle School, she later enrolled at King Drew Magnet High School of Medicine and Science, which was where she got involved in various acting programs, but it was this time that her parents divorced, she later attended Stanford University and graduated in 2007 with a major in African and African-American studies, after graduating from College, she attended New York Film Academy, where she took up acting classes.
