Ortiz was signed by Seattle Mariners on November 28, 1992. He made his professional debut in 1994. On September 13, 1996, he was traded to the Minnesota Twins. He quickly established himself in the Minnesota Twins team and played for the team from 1997 until 2002. After his release from Minnesota Twins, he began to play for Boston Red Sox and played for them from 2003 until 2016.
