Franco Harris played for Penn State University’s Nittany Lions, where he served as a blocker for the All-American running back Lydell Mitchell. In 1972, he began to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers and he was chosen in nine consecutive Pro Bowls from 1972 till 1980. He made record as the first African-American as well as the first Italian-American to be named Super Bowl MVP and he achieved this feat in 1975. In 1984, he was released by the Steelers and he then signed with the Seattle Seahawks, playing just eight games with them. In 1999, Harris was ranked number 83 on The Sporting News’ list of the 100 greatest football players.

In 2008, Harris attended the Democratic National Convention, in Denver, Colorado and he voted for Barack Obama during the 2008 Presidential elections. In January of 2011, he became the co-owner of the Pittsburgh Passion. In 2011, he worked with The Meadows Racetrack and Casino. In 2006, he was honoured by The Heinz History Centre, they installed a life-size figure of Harris in the grand concourse of Pittsburgh International Airport.
