Stiff Competition and Abundant Variety
Nine years ago, the Mahalo Yacht Racing Team sailed to victory at the New York Yacht Club-hosted 2015 Swan 42 U.S. National Championship. Racing team owner Charles Kenahan and his crew were victorious after earning six podium finishes across the championships’ nine races. In doing so, they sailed a near-perfect regatta and prevailed over tough competition from other top Swan 42 teams representing some of the premier yacht clubs from around the globe.
The Swan 42 U.S. National Championship began in 2007 and promptly became a staple of Newport’s summer events schedule. Kenahan is a long-time resident of the Rhode Island seaside city, famed for its rich sailing history.
A Joint Pursuit of Excellence
Kenahan remembers the 2015 Swan 42 U.S. National Championship as though it took place yesterday. “The third day of the event was a highlight,” he recalls, chatting about the events of almost a decade ago. “With 15 or 16 knots of south-westerly breeze, the wind and the water were in mine and my crew’s favor,” the yacht racing team owner notes.
Mahalo Yacht Racing Team’s Swan 42 U.S. National Championship win came after three years of hard work for her crew. “I first purchased the boat in 2012,” Kenahan explains. “Fast-forward to July 2015, and despite having just finished second-to-last in the Sail Newport Regatta, we stormed to victory at the Swan 42 U.S. National Championship.”
Until then, he and his full crew hadn’t sailed together since the previous year’s Rolex Swan Cup in the Mediterranean. So, to what do they owe their Swan 42 U.S. National Championship comeback to victory? “A joint pursuit of excellence,” says Kenahan, “and, of course, plenty of hard work and good communication.”
