Tarana Burke is an American civil rights activist and public speaker. She is best known for being the founder of the Me Too Movement and for being a Senior Director at Girls for Gender Equity in Brooklyn, New York.

Tarana Burke Life Story and Biography

Tarana Burke was born on September 12, 1973 in The Bronx, New York and she was also raised there. She grew up in a low-income and working class family and she was raped and sexually harassed a lot while growing up.

According to her, the bad experiences she had while growing up was what motivated her to be actively involved as a human right activist. While in College, she organized various protests and seminars regarding racial justice.

Career

Tarana Burke began her activism movement in 1989. She developed the non-profit organization ‘Just Be’ in 2003 and the organization is an all-girls program for young black girls aged from 12 to 18.

In 2006, she founded the Me Too movement in a bid to raise awareness of the pervasiveness of sexual abuse and assault in the society. In 2008, she relocated to Philadelphia and worked at Art Sanctuary Philadelphia.

In 2018, she graced the 75^th Golden Globe Awards as a guest of Michelle Williams and she received the 2018 prize for courage from The Ridenhour Prizes.

She works as Senior Director at Girls for Gender Equity in Brooklyn, New York. She regularly organizes seminars and workshops at schools, workplaces and other places to create as much awareness as possible so as to decrease the case of sexual violence.
