Akira Toriyama Career
Akira Toriyama started out by working at an advertising agency. He later quit the job and contested in a Jump magazine in order to win the prize money. In 1978, he made his debut with the story Wonder Island. His fame came immediately after he wrote the comedy series Dr. Slump which ran from 1980 until 1984. In 1984, he began work on Dragon Ball which immediately became very successful and in 1995, it hit over 7 million sold copies. He also served as character designer for the Super Famicom RPG Chrono Trigger and for the fighting games Tobal No. 1 and Tobal 2 for the Playstation. On December 2, 2002, he made a promotional appearance in the United States at the launch of weekly Shonen Jump’s North American counterpart called Shonen Jump. In March, 2005, an electric car designed by him began selling under CQ Motors. In 2006, he worked on one-shot called Cross Epoch and in 2008, he collaborated with Masakazu Katsura to create the Jump SQ one-shot titled Sachie-chan Good!!. In 2011, he collaborated with Shonen Jump to create awareness and support for those affected by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. Some of his other works include; Escape in 1981, Mad Matic in 1982, Hetappi Manga Kenkyujo from 1982 until 1984, Chobit in 1983, Lady Red in 1987, Sonchoh in 1987, Cowa! From 1997 until 1998, Kajika in 1998, Sand Land in 2000, Jaco the Galactic Patrolman in 2013, Dragon Ball Super in 2015 and many more. His art books and animes include; Dragon Ball Daizenshu: The Complete Illustrations, Dragon Ball: A Visual History, Akira Toriyama: Dragon Quest Illustrations, Dragon Quest, Dragon Ball Z, Crusher Joe and more.
