Sakina Jaffrey was born on February 14, 1962 in New York City, New York, United States and she was born to Indian parents, her father is Saeed Jaffrey, an actor and her mother is Madhur Jaffrey, an actress and food and travel writer, her parents divorced when she was three years old and she grew up with two older sisters named Meera Jaffrey and Zia Jaffrey.
Sakina Jaffrey attended Cristo Rey New York High School and she later enrolled at Vassar College and graduated in 1984 with a major in Chinese Language and Literature.

Sakina Jaffrey began her acting career in 1988, she starred alongside her father in the 1991 movie Masala and also starred with her mother in The Perfect Murder in 1988 and in 2002, she appeared in The Truth About Charlie and in 2004, she starred alongside her kids Cassius and Jamila in Raising Helen and The Ode in 2008.
Jaffrey also went on to feature in the NBC television series Timeless and she starred as Homeland Security agent Denise Christopher and in 2017, she starred in the comedy-drama film The Meyerowitz Stories and over the years, she has starred in many more movies and television shows and series.
